DEEP DOWN THINGS

I belong to a writers group here in Squamish that meets every two weeks from fall to late spring. We are given suggested assignments to write about for the next meeting from our group leader, Jude Goodwin, which we are free to do or not, as we wish. Some have other projects they’re working on and prefer to present parts of them for our consideration and feedback. In this instance the assignment was to write a piece on “Deep Down Things,” with the following page of instructions:
The word “sacred” according to the Oxford Universal Dictionary means something “esteemed or held especially dear.” What do you hold dear? Is music sacred to you? Is it your cat? A particular park bench? Laughter? Making love…places that help make you feel tender and poignantly aware of yourself and so on. Think of everyday, dear things in your life; they do not have to be extraordinary. Who and what blesses your life?
Write down 12 names of people, animals, plants, objects, events, experiences or places that are sacred to you. Take time composing this list. The word “list” has its roots in the word “listen.” Listen to your list.
After you write down these 12 things, let your sacred list live in you for a while. Feel them. Leave your list then come back to it. Re-read the list you composed, and say your words and phrases aloud to yourself. Take the feelings of your sacred things deep down inside yourself. Select one (1) item from your list of 12, the one that resonated with you most deeply or the one that remained strongest in your mind after saying the list aloud, and write about that sacred thing (any style, any form: prose, poetry, creative non-fiction – or?). Try to capture your internal feelings about this person, object or event or place and make your reader feel it.

Great article. There’s a lot of good data here, though I did want to let you know something – I am running Fedora with the circulating beta of Firefox, and the look and feel of your blog is kind of funky for me. I can understand the articles, but the navigation doesn’t work so well.

Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.
